A life less ordinary: about cognitive adaptation and psychological functioning among cancer patients treated with radiotherapy The study presented in this thesis was performed at the Nothern Center for Healthcare and Research of the University of Groningen and the department of social and organisational psychology of the university of Groningen in The Netherlands. The study was performed in the colleboration with Radiation Oncology Departement of Groningen University Hospital, Radiation Institute Friesland and Isala Klinieken Zwolle. About how cancerpatients adapt to cancer? Nowadays much more is known today about patients’ psychological functioning during the course of cancer and about the strategies they use in order to deal with this disease than was known twenty years ago. However, not all questions have been answered and new questions have been raised. The main purpose of this thesis was to address several of these unanswered questions by investigating the process of adaptation in cancer patients treated with external radiotherapy. There has been paid attention to both negative and positive outcomes of cancer and its treatment. To show some individual differences in the ways patients cope with cancer and treatment with radiotherapy, the thesis included personal accounts from two patients: One patiënt was diagnosed with breast cancer, and the other was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Their stories were used to illustrate the content of the thesis.
